Immediate source of acquisition

Plans of Manchester Schools were transferred to the Library in October 1965, from the Department of Education and Science.

Administrative / biographical background

Circular No. 1, November 1839, of the newly formed Committee of Council for Education required that applications for the grant "issued in aid of Private Subscriptions for the erection of School Houses," should be accompanied by plans. Further instructions stated that the plans should be drawn to scale and indicate the dimensions of every room, the arrangement of the benches, desks, gallery and other apparatus and that a sketch of air-grates and flues should be included in the sectional drawings Minutes of the Committee of Council on Education; with appendices, and plans of school-houses, 1839-40. 1840. (Parl. 379.42 E3).
