1153. Margate Steamer Venus (XM & XN). Sep., Dec. 1820, Apr. 1821, Apr., May 1827. 13 items.
Two 30 horse power side lever engines, with 31½ inch cylinders, 3 foot strokes. Power increased to 35 horses 1826.Section and side view of the boat, marked in pencil "Evans" (this drawing is similar to the "draft" drawings in the Steam Boat Box); cross-section of the boat and engines and plan of the sleepers - partially shaded reverse drawing; plan of the engines and boiler, side view of engine and section of boiler - coloured original and coloured reverse drawings.
Also the following later items: plans and sections of boiler - 2 original and 2 partially coloured reverse drawings made in the London office, Apr. 1827; plans and sections of boiler made by Isaac Horton - 3 drawings, May 1827.Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 729. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 312.
For the London & Margate Union Co. The boat appears to have briefly been called Matchless before she was named Venus. She was fitted with 35½ inch cylinders without steam cases in 1826. The cylinders were rated as 38 horses, but were referred to as 35 horses. Venus was wrecked in a collision with HMS Firefly in Apr. 1831.
