Description (What the record is about)
-
In 1824 John Langford conveyed two houses on the bank under the castle abutting DL/D 145/17 on the north and White Lion Lane on the west to John Huggett, cordwainer. He died in 1867 leaving the property to his son Dennett Huggett who sold in 1869 to Charles Simmons, builder, who then sold almost immediately-to Edward James, builder. James also bought, in 1870 from Thomas Edward Beard, the property adjoining on the south, being a piece of land with a stable, which passed on the death of Robert Chester Cooper in 1833 to the Rev Frederick Shum and Thomas Tourle, who then sold it in 1869 to Beard. James pulled down the two houses and stable and built four houses on the site. He then mortgaged these in 1870 to Alfred Hammond, ironmonger. In 1898 James and Hammond's executors sold the property to Sarah Marchant, later Mrs Sarah Punker.
