The London Metropolitan Archives did not wish to retain the case books and it was decided that Surrey Record Office should keep those relating to the period when Springfield was a Surrey institution.

References to the establishment of Springfield Hospital as the first county asylum in 1841 and its subsequent administration to 1889 will be found in the order books of the Surrey Quarter Sessions, QS2/1/-. For further records relating to the establishment of the asylum see QS/5/6/1/1-3. Annual reports of the asylum, 1848-1889, are held as QS/5/6/1/4-41 and QS2/1B/-. For special reports, 1847-1860, see QS5/6/1/42-50. An attendance book of the Committee of Visitors, 1842-1889, is held as QS5/6/1/51 and a rule book, 1850, as QS5/6/1/52. For correspondence and papers relating to the site of the hospital, 1837-1889, see QS5/6/1/53-62. Architectural plans of the site are held as QS5/6/1/63-74.</p> <p>All other records of the hospital, other than case books, are held by the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA), including patient registers from 1841.</p></span>
