Letter from Thos. Webb to his "Dear child":
In answer to entreaty from her saying she could read writing - " .... my duty is sutch as to take all opportunity to give you good instructions in your early days .... my desire is that you should above all things before you go out of your chamber in a morning humbly petition to your great creator for his guidance and direction the following day. And likewise for his protection before you go into your bed at night; and as you dayly experience your governesses instructions by your cherefull and ready complyance to her instructions you may gain respect for your good improvement, the doing of which you will not only show your obedience to my commands but intitle you to equall your brothers and sisters...." Having taken this opportunity to improve the occasion Webb disarmingly redeems himself in a postscript - "My dear if you cannot read the inclosed keep it untill you see one of your brothers who may assist you."
