Description (What the record is about)
-
Southampton borough was exempted from the Lord High Admiral's jurisdiction by the charter of incorporation of 1445, and this was confirmed by the charter of 1451. The mayor held a court as admiral for the entire port (which extended from Portsmouth to Lymington) near the town quay and in other towns. The court was chiefly concerned with its right to all wreckage found within the port, unlicensed ferrymen and fishing offences. The last volume is solely concerned with the appointment of sandwalkers - the bailiffs of the court.
