Administrative / biographical background

The donor, born in 1918, is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Booth. They had married in 1900, when Thomas was 28 and his wife, a year younger. Thomas who lived in Carrbrook, Stalybridge was a packer at the Calico Printers Association. Elizabeth lived in Newton Heath and was a weaver at an Oldham mill. Thomas was called after his father who had left Blackley where he had worked in a bleach works and moved to Millbrook to take a similar job at Thomas Gartsides, which later became the C.P.A.. He left this job also to become the licensee of the Church Inn in Millbrook. The donor's maternal grandparents were William and Charlotte Hodgkinson. William was a self-employed file-maker in Newton Heath. The donor was an upholsterer until 1939. After service in the R.A.F. he joined the C.I.S. Ltd and was a life insurance inspector until his retirement.
