Washington Urban District was formed on the 1 April 1922 following the County of Durham (Washington Urban District) Confirmation Order 1922. It consisted of part of Chester-le-Street Rural District, Barmston Civil Parish, Usworth Civil Parish and Washington Civil Parish.

Following the Washington New Town (Designation) Order 1964, Washington New Town was established which included part of Washington Urban District.

The Local Government Act of 1972 abolished Washington Urban District and from 1 April 1974 it became part of Sunderland Metropolitan Borough.
