The Pratts of Prattshayes (previously Spratshayes) owned a considerable estate centering around the Highlands of Orcombe and their hinterland. John Drewe Pratt (d. 1903) took a great interest in the affairs of the Exmouth Urban District Council, especially in the expansion of the town as a holiday resort. Most of the papers of this collection are thus concerned with very local matters, such as the Marine Drive and the extension of public services to different parts of Exmouth and Littleham. In 1961, the National Trust acquired the property together with the deeds and papers of the Pratt family; the latter were deposited at the Devon Record Office in the same year.
