The Strand Board of Works was created as a result of the 1855 Metropolis Management Act. The vestries of the smaller parishes were combined into boards of works responsible for highway maintenance, sewerage and drainage, other than main drains and sanitary provision. The Strand Board of Works consisted of the parishes of St Anne Soho, St Clement Danes, St Mary-le-Strand, St Paul Covent, the Liberty of the Rolls and the Precinct of the Savoy. The Strand Board (largely composed of co-opted members of the parish vestries) operated until 1900, when it was abolished under the 1899 Local Government Act as part of the wider restructuring of London government.
The archives of the Strand Board of Works also include material from the Strand and Westminster Poor Law Unions. The Strand Union consisted of the parishes of St Anne Soho, St Clement Danes, St Mary-le-Strand and St Paul Covent Garden. St Martin-in-the-Fields joined the Strand Union in 1868, at which date St Anne Soho departed to form the Westminster Union along with St James, Piccadilly.
