Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume LL4 is the fourth in the series of nine 'LL' volumes, which covers predominately the various Vicars Choral Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the following estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by commutation: Exeter Vicars Choral Estates (part of property) on 29 September 1866 (effective date) and pulished in the London Gazette on 5 November 1867 by Order in Council; Salisbury Vicars Choral Estates (part of property) on 25 March 1867 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 15 May 1868 by Order in Council; and St. Davids Vicars Choral Estates on 15 March 1876 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 25 July 1876 by Order in Council.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Devonshire, parishes of Exeter St. Mary Major, Exeter Holy Trinity, Exeter St. Mary Steps, Exeter St. Petrock, Exeter St. Kerrian, Exeter St. Pancras, Exeter St. Martin, Exeter St. David, Exeter St. Sidwell, Woodbury, Farringdon, Clyst Honiton, Dunsford and Westleigh; the county of Wiltshire, parishes of Orcheston St. George, Salisbury St. Thomas, Salisbury St. Martin, Laverstock; the county of Dorset, parishes of Upway and Broadwinsor; and the county of Pembrokeshire, parish of St. David.
