Rye Borough Council: building regulation plans

Plans deposited with the Council for approval under bylaws for the regulation of new buildings, accompanied by forms recording inspection and approval. In 1894 the Council inherited the task of giving approval to these plans from its predecessors, the local board of health and urban sanitary authority, but no plans survive from the period before 1897. References to the passing of plans (sometimes indexed under 'plans') are to be found in the minutes of these authorities, 1871-1923 (DR/B/97/1, 2; DR/B/21/5-10

The plans were at first serially numbered each year but in 1927 a simple numerical system was introduced which continued until 1946; therefore plans were subject to approval under the Council's town planning scheme as well as under the bylaws and have TP references. The plans were arranged in annual bundles and renumbered, perhaps in 1927. A register of the surviving plans, compiled retrospectively (DR/A/8/9), covers 1897-1912 only.

From the passing of the Town and Country Planning Act 1932 'interim development orders' were made for proposed buildings and IDO reference numbers are noted in red ink on the plan envelopes.

The covering dates given for each box of plans relate to the dates of deposit of the plans and not to their approval.
