Administrative / biographical background

This collection of papers relate largely to the ropemaking business of the Haggie family. The history of Robert Hood Haggie can be traced back to 1789 when the Willington Ropeworks was founded by William & Edward Chapman. Messrs. Chapman were succeeded by Robert Hood Haggie. Following the death of Robert Hood Haggie his three sons took over responsibility for the business which also operated out of premises in Queen Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The company also had premises in Lime Street, London.

Brief histories of R. Hood Haggie & Son, manufacturers of hemp & wire rope & flexible steel hawsers, Willington, & Haggie Brothers, Hemp & Wire Rope Works, Gateshead, can be found in Tyneside Industries (Historical Publishing Co. 1889).
