These ledgers were known at different times as Impersonal Ledgers or Nominal Ledgers, but the accounts contained within them remain consistent throughout the sub-series'. In 1954 Dorman Long spilt into four separate concerns; Dorman Long and Co. Ltd., Dorman Long (Steel), Dorman Long (Chemicals) and Dorman Long (Bridge and Engineering). After this point control of many of the works then passed to the subsidiaries, and therefore some of these series of ledgers will continue in the collections for those companies (BS/DLS, BS/DLBE, DL/DLC).
