Description (What the record is about)
-
This section contains personal, social and professional correspondence which was sent jointly to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury and her husband George Cadbury during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Family letters from Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's father John Taylor and George Cadbury's father John Cadbury are included as well as letters from George Cadbury's sister Maria Fairfax and his cousin Hannah Cadbury. Correspondence sent to the Cadburys by Rendel Harris, the first Director of Studies at Woodbrooke, and Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's American cousin the Quaker academic Rufus Jones is also featured in this section, providing an insight into the personal relationships and public activities of these men. In addition, the section contains a volume of papers relating to Wynds Point, the Cadbury family's holiday home in Malvern, and an illuminated address which was presented to George Cadbury on the occasion of his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury in June 1888. Correspondence between George Cadbury and his children written during the early twentieth century is also included in this section. A number of these letters feature pencil annotations added by Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury. This correspondence may have functioned as an early version of the family journal letters which Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury distributed amongst her family from 1904 onwards.
Please note that owing to the similarities in surname, Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury, George Cadbury and a number of the people who wrote to the couple from the Taylor and Cadbury families are referred to in places throughout this section by their first name.
