Description

Folios 674-675. Letter from James Saunders, Clerk to the East Dereham Local Board in the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, to the Local Government Board. He encloses a copy of a letter of resignation from Henry Bird Vincent the Medical Officer to the Local Board. Although this has been laid before the board, no resolution, other than directing that a copy should be sent to the Local Government Board was passed. He reminds them that this post to which Vincent was reappointed expires on 31 October 1880. He confirms that a notice was given in accordance with the Board's regulations as to the reappointment of a medical officer and that at the next board meeting a resolution should be moved appointing Vincent for another year at the same salary as he at present receives. As the Board pays for part of the salary out of the parliamentary grant he requests their instructions in the matter and to be informed as to whether it is necessary for Vincent to give three months' notice of his intention to resign his appointment.
Copy of letter from H B Vincent resigning from the office as Medial Officer to the East Dereham Local Board dated October 10 1880 and signed by Vincent.
Annotated: 'This appointment was sanctioned by the Board up to 29 of September last but it would appear that the MOH [Medical Officer of Health] had been appointed by the SA [Sanitary Authority] up to 31 October. The resignation was tendered on 12 October I.e. between these dates. The MOH had agreed to give one months' notice of his intention to resign. See [Q717] 91740/1879'.
Annotated: 'Mr Boyle. Say that it appears from the information furnished when Doctor Vincent was last appointed MOH that he had agreed to give the SA one months' notice of his intention to resign his office or to forfeit such same etc. At the same time state generally that the acceptance of an officer's resignation by the Sanitary Authority is not necessary to render the office legally vacant. Add that as the Office is now vacant the period for which Doctor Vincent was appointed has expired, the Sanitary Authority should proceed to make a fresh appointment', 5 November 1880.
Annotated: 'I concur if the letter stops at appointment', Courtenay Boyle, Local Government Inspector, 6 November 1880.

Paper Number: 94852/1880.

Poor Law Union Number: 302.

Counties: Norfolk.
