Administrative / biographical background

The Salopian Lodge of Charity No. 117 was established in 1810. In 1810 the lodge was a military lodge and was held in the Shropshire Militia, resident at Gosport, Hampshire. The lodge moved with the regiment across the country until 1820 when the military warrant was exchanged for a civil warrant and the lodge settled in Shrewsbury in Shropshire, meeting at the Trumpet Inn, Hills Lane. The name Salopian Lodge of Charity appears in the lodge correspondence in 1811 but it appears that the name only came official in 1820. The lodge has met at many inns and hotels in Shrewsbury but now meets at Freemasons' Hall, Crewe Street, Shrewsbury.
