Description (What the record is about)
-
A cartulary compiled by Arthur Gregory, c. 1565-90. Much of the material is derived from his own records, but there is evidence that he had access to other sources; for example, government inquisitions, a volume in the Leigh collection (which has marginal notes in his hand) and the Segrave cartulary, now lost. There is a select list of names on folios 1 to 6, a select index of names, places and subjects on folios 458 to 460, and an index to Stivichall material on folio 30. Besides these aids, Arthur Gregory gives many cross references in his marginal notes. The cartulary is divided into the following main sections

Physical condition (Aspects of the physical condition of the record that may affect or limit its use)
- 11 x 15 ins., 444 folios. The first two folios and the last two are of parchment, and consist of four leaves from a mediaeval religious compilation. The remaining folios are of paper and, with the exception of the first and last, were numbered by Arthur Gregory 1 to 460. This foliation has been retained for reference purposes, even though several sheets were torn out after the numbering. The original limp cover is of tooled leather with a soft lining, and the whole is bound with three broad raised bands. The middle band still has a buckle attached but the strap is missing.
