Browne was President of the Plinian Society, Edinburgh, Scotland and a physician at Stirling, Scotland in 1830. He was also the superintendent of Montrose lunatic asylum; superintendent of Crichton Institute at Dumfries in 1839; and Commissioner in Lunacy for Scotland, 1857–70.
