Description

With the exception of financial records the series of volumes are almost complete from the grant of the charter in 1699. The Assembly Minute Books begin in 1710 (For the years 1699-1710 reference should be made to the volume of Decrees of the Mayor, Jurats and Common Council, 1699-1720, in KAO U725. This is not an official minute book, and it was perhaps for the private use of the Town Clerk.), the Sessions Books in 1719, and the Plaint Books of the Court of Record in 1707, after which all three series are unbroken. There are also minutes for the Pavement Commissioners from the passing of the Act in 1791, and accounts of the chapel wardens from 1707 to 1750, Deal Chapel being under the patronage of the Corporation. No Treasurer's Accounts have, however, survived

Most of the papers would appear to have been lost, the small number to have survived being a very miscellaneous collection: from among these the militia lists [AL1 1-2], the oath rolls dating from 1714 [JQo 1-13], land tax assessments, 1722-71 [RT1 1-3], and the plans and maps of the workhouse, court and gaol, chapel, and streets, and neighbouring lands, dating from 1734, might be singled out as of some importance.

Administrative / biographical background

From the 13th century Deal has been within the liberty of the Cinque Ports. Until the end of the 17th century it was a member of the port of Sandwich, and governed by a Deputy and Assistant, nominated by its inhabitants, and appointed by the Mayor and Jurats of Sandwich. As a result of its increased importance as a port for shipping passing through the Downs, it was made a borough by charter in October 1699. The Corporation consisted of a Mayor, twelve Jurats, and twenty-four Common Councilmen, and the borough was given the usual right to hold a court of general sessions of the peace and a court of record. Pavement Commissioners were set up under an Act of 1791
