The manor, with its member the hamlet of Funtington, was inherited by the Bigods as coheirs of the Marshal earls of Pembroke, although it seems to have been held, in the first instance, by Hugh Bigod (d. 1266), the younger son of the Marshal heir and brother of Roger, earl of Norfolk (d. 1270) [VCH Sussex, iv. 183-4, 191.] Stoughton, West Stoke and West Thorney, the other Sussex manors which soon came to be associated with Bosham, were also acquired by Hugh. [VCH Sussex, iv. 193, 195] Those manors (which all lay in the southern part of the rape of Chichester, the westernmost rape) were held by Beatrice, widow of Thomas of Brotherton's son Edward, until her death in 1383; she had married secondly Thomas de Breouse (d. 1361). In the partition of 1484 the Sussex lands (except West Stoke and Stoughton) were assigned to Berkeley, although in 1476 Bosham, with Funtington and West Thorney, had formed part of the jointure agreed for the duchess Elizabeth.
