Administrative / biographical background

The Rights of Way Act 1932 laid down the principle that a route which had been used by the public without interruption for 20 years should be deemed a highway and this was re-enacted by the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.

The maps listed here were prepared by the District Council under the 1932 Act on Ordnance Survey 6-inch sheets to show reputed rights of way within the district. Each map shows district and parish boundaries and distinguishes between carriageways, bridlepaths and footpaths. The rights of way of each type are separately numbered by parish. The plans are undated but were evidently completed after the reorganisation of the boundaries of Battle Rural District in 1934.
