Josephine Butler to Miss Priestman

Written from Neuchatel. They have had three meetings there and she is much encouraged but much exhausted. She goes to next day to Berne to meet M. Ruchonnet and other members of the Federal Government and then on to Liege; anxious to have a good large gathering of English at Brussels Conference the last week in Oct. Hopes to get home on the 22nd. Mentions the grant to the Humberts, more convenient if paid in two parts. Goes into the question of money owing to Mr Burfoot: Mr Stuart at the moment very engrossed with the 'Star' (the Editor having resigned) so can think of nothing else. Has been so troubled about money that she wonders whether Mr Stuart would like to be relieved of the Treasurership. Privately is afraid that 'his wife does not like our Cause and that she is a drag on him in this respect'. A little anxious as to the possibility of the Procureur General prosecuting her in connection with the case of the violation of the children in Geneva [See letter of 4 Feb 1891]. Feels Mr Stuart would be annoyed if the Federation had to pay a heavy fine for her.
