Administrative / biographical background

Introduction (obtained from DE2913/44/27)

Captain Donald L. Weir was educated at Bedford School. At the time of the outbreak of the war in 1914 he was serving in the 2nd Leicestershire Regiment in India. Towards the end of 1914 his battalion was ordered to France where he served until 1915 gaining the Military Cross during this time. In 1915, his regiment was despatched to Mesopotamia and, for a time, he took command of his battalion. His leadership and gallantry at Sheikh Saad earned him the D.S.O. in the field.

After a spell in England he returned to France and, for a short time, took command of the 1st Battalion of his own regiment. He was later transferred to the command of the 1st Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment and, during this time, was awarded a bar to the D.S.O. - again for his personal leadership, gallantry, and initiative.

During the period of the war, Weir was also awarded the Serbian Order of the Karageorge (with swords) which is given for military deeds of exceptional brilliance.

D.L. Weir died of cholera in India on 21st April, 1921.
