Description

Crank Engines. (12 items).

418. Birley & Hornby, Manchester (K). Jul.-Sep. 1809, Aug. 1831, Nov. 1840. 12 items.
53 horse power crank engine, with 36? inch cylinder, 7 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.
Also gas lighting apparatus.

Reverse longitudinal section of engine house, cross-section of the engine house and gasometers etc., cross-section of the retorts and ash and tar pits, cross-section of the gasometer pit and 3 boilers, cross-section of the engine house and longitudinal section of boiler, plan of the engine house, boilers, retorts and gasometer pit; reverse plan and section of the engine house showing the pumps etc; sheet with sketch section of the engine house, gasometer pit, boiler, part of mill etc., plan of the engine, boilers, gasometers, retorts etc., plan of the mill showing yard, engine house, spinning and preparation rooms etc. The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following later items: connecting rod and crank, gudgeon and plummer block etc. - 3 drawings marked "for the repairs of Birley & Kirk's 53 horse engine" and "sent from Manchester by William Bennett 1 Aug. 1831"; 2 drawings of new connecting rod stuck together, not dated (circa Aug. 1831); tracing of elevations and plans of air pump and condenser, date torn away but marked "Copied from a sketch sent here by H. Molyneux & returned to him 8 Nov. 1840."

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 609. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 92.

For Birley & Hornby. Chorlton Mills, Chorlton upon Medlock, Manchester. The gas lighting was ordered at the same time as the engine, and the firm also ordered fire extinguishing apparatus. The firm later became Birley & Kirk, and then Birley & Co.
