Beaumont Of Whitley: Family And Estate Records

The collection includes deeds, estate and household papers, maps, manorial and other documents chiefly relating to Kirkheaton, Lepton, Mirfield, South Crosland and Whitley; also deeds and papers concerning Kirkheaton Church and Grammar School 1435-1873 and King James' School Almondbury 1608-1804; enclosure papers for Lepton, Kirkheaton, Dalton, Whitley and Huddersfield Common 1779-1836; manorial court rolls for Lepton 1536-1747, Heaton 1589-1813, South Crosland 1659-1813

In listing the deeds the following conventions were followed: 1550 was chosen as a dividing date. Before it the language of deeds is supplied; after it is given the language of deeds not in English, excepting feoffments, bonds and quitclaims which continued to be normally in Latin but were not very frequently used. Seals have invariably been noted before 1550 but only those bearing a good impression after it. Generally parties are given in full except for awards, when only the parties to the dispute are given, and for marriage covenants which only have the names of the people being married.

Dates in section WBF/I, II and III are not given in new style as the dates of a previous arranger have been frequently followed to allow greater speed in listing.

There are many genealogies and pedigrees by which the family of Beaumont may be traced. Of the 19th century members, the following are prominent: Richard Henry Beaumont, 1805-1857. He was buried in Kirkheaton church. He lived at Clarence Lodge, Roehampton, Surrey, and also at Brighton. He was a captain in the West Yorkshire Militia and a sub-lieutenant of the 2nd Life Guards. In December 1831 he married Catherine, daughter of Timothy (?Henry) Wiggin from the USA. They had no children and separated in 1846. He left the Whitley Beaumont estate to his godson, Henry Frederick, the eldest son of Henry Ralph Beaumont of Newby Park, Ripon.

Henry Frederick Beaumont DLitt, JP, MP, 1833-1913. He was educated at Eton and matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1852. He was MP (Liberal) for the Southern Division of the West Riding 1865-1874, and for Colne Valley 1885-1892. He was honorary Colonel of the 2nd Volunteer battalion West Riding Division and vice patron of the Yorkshire Archaeological society. He presented Beaumont Park to Huddersfield Corporation in 1880 and was made a freeman of the borough. In September 1857 he married Maria Johanna, daughter of Captain William Garforth RN, of Wiganthorpe, near Malton. They had eight daughters and two sons, the eldest being Ralph Henry, who died in 1948, when the Beaumont male line again failed.
