Description

"Thaccompte of John Thynne, Stewarde of Housholde to .... Edwarde [Seymour], Erle of Hertforde"; etc., 1 Oct. 30 Hen. VIII.[1538]-30 Sept. 31 Hen.VIII [1539].

The Receipts, which are signed "E. Hertford" at the end of each month, amount for the whole year to £3959.4.6½.

The Payments, also signed at the end of each month, are classified, viz. (a) Household expenses, as "Bakehous and pantrye", "Buttrye", "celler", "Spicerye", "Kechynne", etc., £1258.6.1¾. f.8;- (b) "Necessaries and foren expenses", (including preparations for the King's visit to Wolfhall); £177.14.4. f.25;- (c) Utensilles", £22.9.9¼. f.34; (d) "Wagis", £102.13.10. The highest payment is to John Thynne, viz. 20 sh. a quarter. f.39;- (e) "Stable", £117.9.2. f.41;- (f) Greyhounds and spaniels, £2.6.9. f.48;- (g) "Almes", 6 sh.8d. f.49;- (h) "Rewardes", £175.15.11. f.50;- (i) "Expensis in lawe", £114.6.10. f.57;- (k) "Jewelhous", £2.6.8. f.61;-(l.) "Apparell", £224.14.6½. f.62;- (m) "Warderobe of Beddis", £76.5.7.f.69;- (n) "Building and reparacions", £117.14.7. f.72;- (o) "Extraordinari paimentes", including play (£245.16.2), Purchases of lands, etc. (£1214.13.4), "a Subsidie" (£25), rents, annuities, and "Harnesses and Javelinges" (£91.14.2), in all £1666.8.1½ f.76.

The total expenses for the year amount to £4058.18.11¾, or adding the balance from the preceding year £4154.4.11. The amount therefore due on the accompt (see Receipts above) to John Thynne is £195.0.4½.

In the original leather binding, with flap and thong, the sides and flap bear a stamp containing a hound, falcon and bee amid foliage and flowers, with the binder's-mark of John Reynes.
