The following papers were deposited in the library on permanent loan between July 1977 and January 1986 by Dame Mabel Tylecote, D.B.E., Ph.D., LL.D., daughter of John Ernest Phythian, (1858 - 1935), M.A., solicitor, lay preacher, University Extension Lecturer and authority on Art, Councillor for Cheetham Ward, 1892 - 1898, and Chairman of the Manchester City Art Gallery Committee, 1895 - 1898. Most of the papers relate to the activities of J.E. Phythian and his father, Joseph Phythian of Cheetham, smallware manufacturer and member of Manchester School Board.
