GOVERNOR WENTWORTH'S CORRESPONDENCE

Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Wentworth, Lady Wentworth and their son Sir Charles Wentworth

The letters calendared here cover the period 1768 to 1833, with one of 1850 and a few undated items. Most of them are from the Marchioness of Rockingham, the 4th Earl and Countess Fitzwilliam, and the 5th Earl Fitzwilliam and his family. They were returned to Earl Fitzwilliam after Sir Charles' death.

There is an account in one of Lady Rockingham's letters, 28th September 1784 (WWM Gov 13) of the election of Charles James Fox for the City of Westminster. There are also letters about the Governorship of Nova Scotia, in 1792.

Sir John Wentworth (1737 - 1820) was Governor of New Hampshire 1766 - 1775 and subsequently of Nova Scotia 1792 - 1808. He was created a baronet in 1795. He married in 1769 and his wife, Lady Frances Wentworth, died in 1813

Their son Charles Mary Wentworth was born in 1775. He lived in England in his later life and died in 1844
