Description (What the record is about)
-
Branches of the MU based in garrisons rather than in parishes began to appear in the late 1880s. With Aldershot, the home of the British army, being within the Winchester Diocese, it was not surprising that the first branch consisting of the wives of military men was set up there. Other army branches quickly followed in Cairo, Gibraltar, India and Malta. It became increasingly clear that the membership of such branches could not be easily fitted into the MU’s diocesan administrative structure. In 1894, therefore, the Army Division was formed to oversee these branches.
