Description (What the record is about)
-
A very miscellaneous bundle of draft notes for articles and lectures, and parts of letters by Isaac Taylor (1787-1865). Most of the items are concerned with aspects of religion and morality, philosophy, literature and science, dealing with such topics as the ideal and reality, pain and evil, the respective roles of Church and State, toleration, the divine revelation of Christianity, the intellectual attainments of mankind and the different branches of knowledge.
Also included are one sheet of notes on realistic and historically accurate illustration of scriptural history written as an introduction to some of his designs [? for Boydell's Illustrations of Holy Writ], part of a short story about a girl named Leonora entitled 'The Little Prater', drafts [?] of an introduction to Greek fables, extracts from 'Robinson's Vindication of Christ's Divinity' and 'Millar's Retrospect of 18th Cent', and a two-page list of books.
There are also 2 draft letters in an unknown hand, concerning teaching methods and the virtue of setting essays on a topic to be decided by the candidate, and on essay on 'The Improvement of Time'.
The notes are written on odd scraps of paper, backs of letters, on the backs of or over drawings, etc. There are thus about 20 drawings scattered through the bundle, mostly pencil and ink sketches of classical figures
