ENTRIES OF CLERGY LICENSED FOR THE PLANTATIONS
These are record books containing complete, or nearly complete lists of persons ordained and licensed by Bishops Sherlock and Terrick. There are a few scattered entries for the closing years of Bishop Gibson's episcopate. The lists are continued with what appears to be some completeness through Bishop Lowth's episcopate and there are a few entries for the earlier years of Bishop Porteus. The Licensees include those licensed for curacies and schoolmasterships in the Diocese of London as well as for the plantations. There are two lists of ordinands (xxxviii. 1-35; xxxix. 1-19) and English licensees (xxxviii. 36-55; xxxix. 20-31) and three lists of clergy licensed for the plantations (xxxviii. 56-73, 90-99; xxxix. 34-47). The second of these (xxxviii. 90-99) was originally on loose sheets but has been bound with xxxviii for better preservation. Volume xxxix has a title-page saying that it was compiled by William Dickes (Bishop Terrick's secretary). A note inside the front cover says it was given by G. W. Dickes to W. Wright (Bishop Randolph's secretary) and by him to the bishop. It appears probable, from handwriting and other indications, that all of the lists were originally compiled by Dickes, copying the entries for Bishop Sherlock's episcopate from records kept by that bishop's secretary, William Lovegrove, and that the lists were continued with some regularity by Bishop Lowth's secretary but only briefly and intermittently by Bishop Porteus's secretary. Volume xxxix does not contain any entries after Bishop Terrick's episcopate. For purposes of indexing, the pages have been numbered (as the letters are) with pencilled numbers on the face of each sheet.
The lists of clergy licensed for the plantations are distributed as follows:
