William A 'Thorne, by his will dated 8 July 1619, and proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury that year, Mary Worsley of Reading, widow, by her will dated 6 February 1620/21 proved in the Archdeaconry Court of Berkshire 11 April 1621 (BRO reference D/A1/134/187), and Peter Wyboe, by his will of c.1620, left legacies of £50, £40 and £20 respectively for the relief of the poor in Reading. These sums were laid out in the purchase of a house in Castle Street next to the county gaol. The property was sold in 1763 for the enlargement of the gaol, the proceeds of £200 being invested in £375 consols, later forming part of the general funds of the Consolidated General Almshouse Charities (see D/QR 1).
