Description

Letter from Lewis R. Price to his uncle.

He has the painful task of communicating the melancholy intelligence of the death of his brother Llewellyn, who was drowned on the evening of the 12th inst. in an attempt to swim across the Danube at Vienna. From the account received from one of the Secretaries to the Embassy, it appears that he swam in the ordinary manner for some distance, and that then turning on his back he continued in this position till he had nearly reached the centre of the stream - when he appeared to be seized with a cramp and sank - no boat was near & no assistance could be rendered him - every effort was made to recover the body but without success up to the date of the letter which was of 14th or 2 days after the occurrence.

"Death has made terrible havoc in our family in the last few years, my dear mother, and then two brothers cut off in the full strength of manhood. My poor father weak & but slowly recovering from a painful illness - is at present in Paris, and I expect him shortly in England. Margaret too who accompanied him is far from strong, and I am alarmed for the consequences when this distressing news shall be known to them. How to break it to them?"
