Additional Manuscripts, catalogue 36

This is the thirty sixth volume of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) to have been catalogued in the West Sussex Record Office and it has been compiled, in general, along the lines indicated in the introduction to the first volume in November 1956

The class of Additional Manuscripts embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents received by the West Sussex Record Office, as distinct from the large family and estate collections, such as the Goodwood Mss., or accumulations from solicitors' offices, such as Oglethorpe and Anderson Mss.; collections of official bodies, such as Quarter Sessions Records; or collections from other bodies, such as the Records of the Royal Sussex Regiment, each of which is referred to and quoted by name. The majority of Additional Manuscripts have been deeds of title, though increasingly a healthy balance of a vast range of other original material has been catalogued in these volumes. However, the pressure of the sheer weight of material to be catalogued has meant that since volume twenty nine in March 1983, the catalogues of title deeds, instead of being the detailed calendars that had been prepared until that date, have mainly been catalogued in summary lists, with the emphasis being placed on the property concerned in the transaction, rather than on the parties involved, or the technicalities of the type of legal conveyance being used. From this volume, the Accession number of each collection catalogued is given at the head of each separate catalogue

This catalogue lists the usual number of small deposits, mostly concerning deeds of title, and includes a large number of deposits from the Sussex Archaeological Society relating to properties in that part of West Sussex that was in East Sussex prior to Local Government Re-Organisation. The sporting records catalogued include the records of Midhurst Cricket Club, 1879-1980 (Add Mss 36298-36369), and of Chichester Cycling Club, 1878-1950 (Add Mss 36984-37067). Among many business records are the papers of the Arundel Branch of the Brighton Equitable Co-Operative Society Ltd., 1948-1967 (Add Mss 36380-36412); the records of the Harting builders, Blackmore and Grant, 1898-1974 (Add Mss 36433-36468); the Midhurst woollen draper, William Ayling, 1829-1837 (Add Mss 36469-36473); the Maxey Fruit Company, 1936-1968 (Add Mss 36531-36535); and the Chichester Jewellers, Messrs. Allen of South Street, 1937-1969 (Add Mss 37160-37191). Of especial interest are some letters of Richard Cobden to Sir Joshua Walmsley, 1848-1857 (Add Mss 37108) and a letter from the 3rd Duke of Richmond in 1780 (Add Mss 37321). The documents range in date from a title deed of Strood in Slinfold, c. 1200-1250 (Add Mss 37111) to Vic Gammon's 1985 Sussex University thesis, 'Popular Music in Rural Society, Sussex 1815-1914' (Add Mss 36786)

No index has been provided for this volume, as all the relevant details of this and all previous volumes have been included in the card indexes of persons, places, manors and subjects, which are to be found in the Search Room of the West Sussex Record Office
