P/679 Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve
Albert served with the Anson battalion of the Royal Naval Division, the sailors who fought as soldiers
He enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry on 31st August 1914 and transferred to the Royal Navy Reserve
Anson Battalion on 10th September 1914, Posted overseas he received a bullet wound to his right arm
Invalided home on 1st July 1915 to recover, he then joined the 188th Brigade machine gun company and was again
severely wounded, by a gun shot wound to the left arm and again invalided home he then joined the 223rd Machine Gun Company, On 1st January 1918
he received a gunshot wound to the right leg and once again invalided home
he re enlisted into the Royal Army Service Corps as S/9706 and served until 6th May 1920 when he was demobilised
Some time after he was demobilised he was admitted into St Luke's mental hospital in Middlesbrough where he died in December 1922
aged 27 the records state as ( Insane) the most likely reason for his admittance (Shell Shock) caused by the trauma of having served throughout the war
He was the son of James a brass fitter and Maria Lewis
Albert can be found on the 1911 census an errand boy aged 16 residing with his parents and siblings at
35 Marton Road Middlesbrough
He was the brother of William Lewis who was killed in action on 27th May 1918
