Lieutenant Duncan Cameron Kennedy - HLI and Machine Gun Corps
Duncan Kennedy was born on 26 April 1896 in Glasgow, second son of Alexander
Kennedy a solicitor and Mary nee Melville of Kelvinside.
Educated at Lorchfield School Helensburgh; Glasgow Academy, where he gained the
McRaith Gold Medal; and Glasgow University where he was a member of the OTC.
He had just completed his first year, when war was declared in August 1914, and he
obtained a commission as 2Lt in the 2/9th Battalion The Highland Light Infantry (Glasgow
Highlanders) Territorial Force on the 4 November 1914.
This unit was formed in September 1914, and in January 1915 to 169 Bde 65
Division, moving to Dunfirmline in August 1915.
He was promoted Lieutenant in July 1915, and obtained a certificate as Machine Gun
Instructor, becoming Machine Gun Officer of his Battalion and employed as a Machine Gun
Instructor at St Andrews and other places.
Although possibly not with his Battalion, between November 1915 and January 1916
it became the 24th HLI and moved to Maldon in March 1916.
At his own request, Lt Kennedy transferred to the Machine Gun Corps in April 1916.
In August 1916 he went to France where he joined 47 MG Coy, 16th (Irish) Division.
This Company had been trained and raised at Grantham, arriving at le Havre on 26
April 1916, and joining the 47 Brigade, 16 Division on 28 April 1916.
Lt Kennedy was killed in action at Ginchy on 9 September 1916, whilst in charge of
two guns in a forward position.
His CO wrote: "He was a splendid young fellow of the right stamp, full of energy and
keenness, and although only with us for a very short time, was a great favourite with all the

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Kennedy, late of 4, Kelvin Drive, Kelvinside, Glasgow. Student at the University of Glasgow. Pier and Face 5 C and 12 C Thiepval Memorial - Somme, France.
