These records were deposited by Mr. W. N. Thursby, the former secretary of the Manchester Teachers' Association, in September 1984.

The Manchester Teachers' Association held their first General Meeting on 7 February 1874. It was one of the associations which formed the Manchester District Union of Teachers (for brief history and list of deposited records see M494/). It was affiliated to the National Union of Elementary Teachers and later the National Union of Teachers.
