Title

Correspondence of the Leveson, later Leveson - Gower, family, Dukes of Sutherland, of Trentham, Staffordshire.

Date

1587-1866

Description

This deposit consists of 12 volumes of letter books of the Leveson and Leveson-Gower family transferred to the Staffordshire Record Office from Dunrobin Castle by the trustees of the late 4th Duke of Sutherland. Ten of the volumes were described in the appendix to the 5th Report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission in 1876, where detailed coverage was given to items of national importance, although some discrepancies and omissions are noted in the present list. This present list summarises each item, including those relating to personal or estate matters which were omitted from the H.M.C. report. The letters H.M.C. used in the list indicate that the coverage given in the H.M.C. report was adequate. The last two volumes, D868/11-12, were not mentioned at all in the H.M.C. report and of these D868/11 contains many letters of early 19th century political interest, An 11th volume described in the H.M.C. report as "A folio volume written in the 17th century, containing copies of Royal and other letters, speeches etc. of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries" was not deposited. Some of the documents in these volumes, particularly the 16th-17th century items may originally have been removed from a box found in the strong room at Trentham whose contents are now the relevant sections of D.593/P & S. This box was packed in an orderly fashion when found, but about half the former contents of a tray which it contained had been removed at some earlier date.
