The building, on the corner of Albion Street and Little East Street, was designed as a School of Art by Henry Card, the County Surveyor, in 1874 and the lamps on the steps were wrought in 1897 for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria (C Brent Historic Lewes and its buildings (1995)). The School of Science and Art closed in 1934 and was subsequently used to house the Borough Museum until its closure and Lewes Library from 1955.
