Fishergate

The Merchants' Cartulary contains copies of 9 Fishergate deeds dating from the mid-13th century (nos. 104-112) but the following (copied as no. 112) is the only original which survives among the Company archives. Originals of six others copied into the cartulary (nos. 104, 106-109, 111) and a bond which was not copied are to be found at the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, Leeds, MD.73 (given in 1927 by Mr James Backhouse of Barmouth, North Wales). These seven documents are calendared in Yorks Deeds vi nos. 588-94- Photocopies of MD.73 are filed with the Fishergate charter described below. They relate to the grant of land in Fishergate made by John de Lascels of Escrick in 1357/8. Edward Ill's licence permitting the alienation in mortmain to the guild of Lascels' messuage is dated 6 June 1359 (Cal. Pat. Rolls 1358-61,227-8; York Memorandum Book iii, 148). In the 1396/7 inquisition ad quod damnum two cottages in Fishergate, worth 40d. a year, are included among the property under consideration.
