The British Roll Turners Trade Society was set up in the 1930s. The Middlesbrough Branch was set up c.1951 and held its meetings at several different locations in the area including the Temperance Institute, Cleveland House and, later, Redcar. The Society represented the interests of those employed as roll turners within the Steel industry, with members coming from works including Britannia Works, Cargo Fleet, Davy and United, Acklam and Cleveland Works. They were involved at a local level in a number of issues such as negotiating with employers on wage structures, overtime payments and tonnage payments. The BRTTS also represented the interests of its members through representation in other bodies such as the Trades Council, whilst the Middlesbrough Branch also sent representatives to the national Executive Committees held in London and Blackpool.
