20 horse power double-acting sun & planet engine, with 23¾ inch cylinder, 5 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.
Reverse general view and plan of the engine and boiler, showing winding barrel; reverse plan and sections of the engine and boiler houses, framing and cistern, showing winding barrel. All the drawings bear letter codes.
Parallel motion - reverse drawing. This drawing was used as a standard drawing for parallel motions for 16 and 20 horse engines. It was used as the basis for the parallel motion drawings for the following engines, each drawing being given a new code: GQO Sheriff Hill Oct. 1801, GPK Marriotts & Robinson Oct. 1801, HBO Easterby Hall & Co. 20 horse Jul. 1802, HVV Henry Coates & Co. 20 horse May 1803.
Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 439. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 46.
For Sheriff Hill Colliery, Sheriff Hill, near Gateshead. Winding engine. This was the second engine erected at Sheriff Hill, the first being a crank engine in 1795 [see Portfolio 5/249]. Note that the Drawings Office Index calls the colliery "Sherry Hill".
