Administrative / biographical background

William Temple House was situated at 29 Trebovir road, Earls Court, London. and purchased in 1951 to be used as a hostel, primarily for students from overseas. In 1968 the House was converted from what previously had been a typical Anglican hostel run by a warden and staff, to a student Hostel run by the students themselves. The House was then owned by the International Students Club (Church of England) Ltd., and governed through the Management Committee of Sussex Gardens International Students Club, while the sponsors of the House included various organisations of the Church of England and the British Council of Churches. The object of the House was to establish and perpetuate an international community of students run by the residents, led by a Committee and Court mainly chosen by them, which would maintain an acceptable standard of living and conduct and provide good accomodation as cheaply as possible. A larger hostel was established later in Sussex Gardens, Paddington.
