Description

Microfilm of ms transcript, in a 5 year diary, of his original diary (no longer extant) from January 1942 - December 1945, ts memoir (216pp), undated, of his service from 1939 - 1945 and ms commonplace book (327pp) kept from August 1942 - August 1945, covering his service in Malaya as the Adjutant and a Battery Commander in the 22nd Mountain Regiment Indian Artillery (August 1939 - June 1941) and then as Brigade Major RA to the Commander Royal Artillery, 11th Indian Division up to February 1942 including the fighting against the Japanese from December 1941 onwards; but primarily recording his experiences as a prisoner of war in the camps at Changi, Singapore including the Selerang incident (February - October 1942), at Taihoku (November 1942 - August 1943) and Shirakawa (August 1943 - February 1945) in Formosa, at Miata in Japan (March - April 1945) and Mukden in Manchuria (April - August 1945) and his repatriation to the United Kingdom via the Pacific and the United States (September - November 1945). Together the documents provide a mass of information about his life and conditions in the different camps in which he was imprisoned as well as of his voyages in the Japanese prison ships ENGLAND MARU (October - November 1942 and WINCHESTER MARU (February - March 1945)
