Genre: Architectural Photography. Similar view to print 840, but slightly closer. The caption states that this view is taken from 'within the railing' , but it appears to have been taken after the removal of the fence. There is evidence of some maintenence work: vegetation has been removed from the rock face above the entrance and digging is in progress immediately in front of the entrance. Pl. 1 of James Burgess, 'The Rock-Temples of Elephanta or Gharapuri' (D.H. Sykes & Co., Bombay, 1871). For another copy of this photograph in better condition (a later printing), see Photo 199 (21).
