Description (What the record is about)
-
Bundle of admittances, receipts, and papers relating to 8 cottages and 14 acres of Improved land upon the lord's waste (Manor of Aspatria) 1633-1710, to which Thomas Salkeld Esq. was admitted (lately occupied by Thomas Bulie, rent 6s.0d.) in 1633, and Sir Wilfrid in 1658; and to a 30-acre piece of Brayton Common (Manor of Aspatria, rent 6s.0d.) "recently" enclosed by Wilfrid Esq. by consent in lieu of his and of his tenants' rights on Aspatria Common, 1676; the bundle also contains: account for legal work (Lawson) 1665-66; Churchwardens' and Overseers' receipt for £10 bequest to the poor of Aspatria by the late Wilfrid, paid by the present Gilfrid, 1710; licence to the said Gilfrid to straighten his wall against Aspatria common, 1721; (copy) letter from the Duke of Somerset at "New Markett" to unnamed person - deploring Sir Wilfrid and "Mr Lowther's People" in their convassing his tenants; as the pair were so ungrateful as to oppose him "when I did Set up my Owne Son" at Cockermouth, they may expect his active opposition now: "Be active and Zealous in this affair", and send me news "from time to time", 23 April 1721
