Title
Prideaux Brune of Place, Padstow
Date
c.1195 - 1919
Description

The collection includes deeds and leases, many of which are for the Padstow area. However, the family is descended from the Prideaux of Soldon, Devon and the Brunes of Plumber, Dorset. As a result there are numbers of documents for both the eastern part of Devon (Farway, Netherton) and the manor of Parley, Hampshire. Among the more interesting documents of title are twelfth century deeds to lands in Hampshire, originally the property of the Abbey of Quarr, Isle of Wight, and the deeds by which some of the lands of the dissolved priory of Bodmin passed to the family.

The rest of the collection contains a wide variety of material. There are court rolls for the manors of Padstow and Padstow Penkivell, the former running from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Because of the prominent part played in local life by gentry families, there are papers relating to the shrievalty and lieutenancy. The family papers include papal grants, church faculties and the pardon granted to Edmund Prideaux by Charles II in 1663 (ref. PB/3/45) for services to the Commonwealth. Letters on this subject to Sir William Morice, his brother in law and Secretary of State to the king can be found in PB/8/9. The letter books, 1677-1723, of Humphrey Prideaux, DD, Dean of Norwich (ref. PB/8/1-4) and of William Wake, archbishop of Canterbury, 1717-1735 (PB/8/5-8) should provide plenty of information on the history of the church in England for the early eighteenth century.

Finally, amongst the legal papers, the correspondence and the plans are references to the harbour at Padstow. The Prideaux Brune family had considerable rights over this as lords of the manor of Padstow, so the disputes and the settlements shall be of great interest for the recording of the history of Padstow and its Harbour Company.
