Description (What the record is about)
-
These documents seem to be a small part of the Colston family papers. The manor of West Lydford, with other manors, was bought by Edward Colston from Sir Edward Hungerford during the reign of Charles II. They were devised to Edward Colston's niece, Mrs. Mary Edwards, whose daughter Sophia married Alexander Ready. He assumed the name of Colston by an Act of Parliament. Only DD/JC 8-10 below relate to the family's main holding, the remaining documents are largely deeds of various pieces of land the title to which ends short of Colston ownership. Presumably, they belong to subsequent purchases by the Colston family, but there is no immediate proof of this.
