Introduction

These photographs were donated to the Record Office by Mrs Scurfield, whose sister-in-law, Dorothy Scurfield, was headmistress of Ludwick School from about 1950 until about 1958, after having started at the school as an assistant mistress in 1945.

Dorothy Scurfield was a pioneer in "play and discovery" methods in the teaching of infant children during the time when John Newsome was Director of Education in Hertfordshire. Dorothy Scurfield went on to teach at Norwich College of Education.
